Eastman - Michel, what does your research group her do at CRC?
Cuhaci - I lead a group of antenna scientists who carry out research on various antenna technologies applicable to communications and satellite systems, satellite communication systems and our group is composed of various scientists and engineers who are networked to different universities and we work jointly with universities and industry to develop new technology for the up and coming wireless systems.
E - Now when we talk about antennas, where are we using antennas in the world today?
C - Antennas are used almost anywhere that, any system that's wireless, and in fact it starts from a simple cellular phone to a laptop, bullet tooth or satellite communications and so on. Even radar systems have antennas. Basically we have here some of the antenna technologies that we are working on and here we see an antenna that could be a satellite TV dish replacement, or satellite communication replacement. Here we have a small antenna that we design for an Ottawa company who was using this for low data rate transmission through low flying or with satellites. And this antenna was designed with the engineers in collaboration and the technology was transferred to them for the use in their system.
E - A company can have an idea and come to the people at CRC and you will help them bring a product to life.
C - In fact yes, we do that quite often at the consultation level and sometimes at the design and prototype level. Depending on the requirements we first discuss with the company and come up with an understanding of their requirement and then sit with them and see if they have a designer that can work with us to design the antenna. And we prefer that mode of operation because through that we can transfer all the technology and the know how to the company. We do not want return business; we want the company to be independently running the whole technology, designing the whole...
E - Product on their own.
C - Product on their own.
E - Okay, explain to me, I know that you have this new testing facility. What is this new testing facility going to do for CRC?
C - The new antenna measurement facility will offer two different ways of antenna measurement capability to us a near field scanning, which will basically scan an antenna at close proximity, and a compact range where an antenna will be measured under distant conditions.
