At the Communications Research Centre Canada (CRC), the Mobile Multimedia in Broadcasting (MMB) project team conducts research in datacasting systems for mobile and portable applications. In its approach, the team aims to demonstrate that datacasting technologies are essential for the efficient routing of new universal and interactive services in a global context of convergence.
Through the development of demonstration systems and prototypes, the MMB project promotes the benefits of wireless datacasting while proposing new approaches. The team also seeks to understand and assess the role of datacasting within a global wireless communications architecture. New converging mobile platforms such as personal digital assistants (PDAs) and "advanced" cellular telephones and portable computers are also studied, given their capabilities for the processing and presentation of digital content.
Currently, the work of the team is focused mainly on the Eureka DAB radio technology. Deployed in Canada and in several countries around the world, this technology was designed specifically for transmitting multimedia services to mobile receivers. A number of standards define a range of flexible data-transport mechanisms: carousel, continuous streaming media, IP and others.
More specifically, the group conducts R&D in the following areas:
The project has a specialized laboratory for the study, integration, design and development of new technologies. An area of the laboratory is also available for receiving visitors and holding demonstrations.
