Characterization of Bandwidth Requirements for wireless Ad Hoc Networks

April 2005 -March 2006

The goal of this project is to carry out a practical analysis and field study in the area of spectrum bandwidth requirements and MANET routing technologies that will provide sustainable peer-to-peer communication. The main challenges in a MANET architecture are the support of a dynamic routing mechanism used to maintain updated routes, and the communication between mobile nodes in the ad hoc network. Many proposals on the routing issues for MANETs have been studied in recent years but have yielded very little information on the bandwidth requirement to support the deployment of such networks under different operational conditions.

The study includes:

  • 1. Bandwidth requirements for supporting the exchange of the control packets for MANETs of different sizes and its impact on spectrum requirements;
  • 2. Bandwidth requirements for supporting a voice application;
  • 3. Performance of the MANET architecture in various operational environments.
