Satellite Systems Research

The Satellite Systems Research group develops and maintains expertise in satellite systems design and analysis and develops ground and spacecraft subsystem technologies for theCollage of CRC researchers working on innovative technology. new satellite systems on behalf of Industry Canada and the Canadian Space Agency, as well as to support the Canadian space industry.

This research group has key expertise and tools in non-geostationary satellite systems analysis that directly benefit Industry Canada and the Canadian industry in planning and coordinating new satellite systems. The group also performs research and development on innovative ground and spacecraft subsystem technologies to meet the needs of the emerging satcom systems and to assist the Canadian space industry through technology transfer. RSS provides leadership in satellite system research and development through its collaboration with universities and industry.

The research program encompasses three fields: systems research, space engineering and subsystem technology development. The systems research activities support the Spectrum Engineering branch of Industry Canada in their regulatory activities as well as the Canadian industry at large. The program also includes leading edge R&D in key areas, which impact on the ability of the future satcom systems to deliver the quality of service expected by users, such as traffic modeling and switching techniques. The space engineering activities encompasses the technical support to the Canadian Space Agency for their remote sensing satellite orbit design, maintenance and control. The subsystem technology development activities are in support of the Canadian industry with the goal being to perform the initial research and development work to bring the technology to the prototype stage for more rapid commercialization.
