Current Research
Natural Language Shells
We have developed natural language information retrieval systems called CHAT and TIPS. Demonstrations of these technologies are available, and the software is available for licence.
Shared Virtual WorldsWe are developing shared virtual realities by modifying the FreeWRL VRML viewer to support multicast IP.
Support Collaborative Writing Through the Web
We are developing a collaborative writing system that will be based on the Web.
Web Education and Training
We provide a distance training course about JavaScript. As well, we have an obsolete course on HTML.
Previous Research
Network Services Research
This research attempts to develop an understanding of the services that make for successful electronic network systems by conducting research on the use and users of the services carried on networks. We are working to develop an empirical methodology for evaluating existing and potential new services, and hope to develop of model of success factors for guiding the development of new service concepts.
Illustrated Audio
Illustrated Audio is a technology that is designed to synchronize image and text displays with a sound track. This allows for computer-based slide shows and for distributing video programs over low-bandwidth networks where full-motion video is not possible.
Multicasting and the MBONE
Multicasting is the ability to distribute network data in an efficient fashion so it is distributed to the appropriate destinations without redundancy. Multicasting protocols have led to interesting multimedia communications projects where users are able to join teleconferences where audio, video, and shared workspace information is distributed to all the participants in a parallel fashion. Our research focuses on the usability of multicast conferencing tools and the design and evaluation of multimedia multicast services.
