Optical Network Technologies

The central theme of this research activity is focused around the investigation of multi-wavelength optical network access technologies at the sub-system level.

The investigations will be centered around the deployment of Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) routers, optical cross connects, optical add-drop multiplexers and network access modules in an operational optical network testbed associated with the Optical Networking Laboratory (ONL) facility. By developing these capabilities in partnership with external organizations, it will be possible to investigate new and innovative protocols and applications for the distribution of broadband services such as digital and high-definition television.

The ONL facility allows to demonstrate the application of optical networking technologies for the distribution of interactive broadband services such as education, entertainment, advanced Internet applications, telemedicine and other services from the curb to the enterprise and later to the home.
