Advanced Video Systems

The Advanced Video Systems group conducts research and development in digital video processing, video compression, human visual perception and subjective evaluation of picture quality related to conventional and advanced television, multimedia and other video communications systems.

Our main areas of research are:

  • Digital Video compression (MPEG-2, MPEG-4, H.263)
  • Stereoscopic (3D) video
  • High Definition Television (HDTV)
  • Subjective evaluations of video quality
  • Human Visual Perception
  • Digital Video transmission over broadband networks
  • Digital video processing such as format conversion.

To conduct its research, the Group has the following specialized facilities:

  • A world-class subjective evaluation facility, the ATEL, conformant to ITU-R Rec. 500.
  • Real-time MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 encoding/decoding
  • Digital Video Server
  • Stereoscopic (3D) display facility
  • High Definition Television (HDTV) video facility, consisting of HDTV video tape recorder and display systems.
  • Real time video acquisition and display system
  • Extensive computer simulations facility
