The Communications Research Centre Canada (CRC) is the federal government's primary laboratory for research and development (R&D) in advanced telecommunications, and a centre of excellence in information and communications technologies (ICT).
CRC works at all levels of the ICT innovation chain - from basic research, to technology development, standards setting, technology transfer and public policy - to build on Canada's strength in ICT.
With core competencies in broadcasting and interactive multimedia, communications networks, photonics, radio fundamentals and wireless, CRC fulfills its mission:
- To serve as the federal government's centre of excellence for communications R&D, ensuring an independent source of advice for public policy purposes;
- To support government operations led by major clients in selected areas of ICT application such as national defence, public safety and space-based communications;
- To identify and close the innovation gaps in Canada's communications sector by engaging in industry partnerships, building technical intelligence, supporting small and medium-sized high technology enterprises, and working with other research organizations across Canada.
Major clients include Industry Canada, National Defence and the Canadian Space Agency, as well as academic and industry partners from Canada and around the world.CRC was established in 1969, but its origins date back to the 1940s.
Today, this agency of Industry Canada, with a research staff of approximately 240:
- conducts core research to address client issues in the longer term and anticipate future direction in the sector;
- supports the development of international standards, which promote harmonization, economies of scale and interoperability;
- licenses its intellectual property (IP) to industry for further development - CRC has nearly 500 active IP licenses worldwide;
- operates an Innovation Centre that provides small and medium-sized Canadian companies with access to its facilities, technologies and expertise;
- operates world-renowned technical facilities and testing laboratories which are available to industry;
- provides a secure environment for organizations to conduct research on the Shirleys Bay Campus in Ottawa.
Numerous Canadian companies owe their success to CRC. Awards paying tribute to the organization's technology transfer track record are many.
CRC has achieved significant scientific and engineering milestones that have contributed to Canada's position as a world leader in ICT.
CRC has an Advisory Council that consists of volunteers members from across Canada representing a cross section of interests in the communications field.
